If there ever was a time for prayer and fasting, it is now. Our nation stands at a crossroads: we will either flourish or perish. God knows all things. Father God we cry out to you to forgive us and to give us the desire to seek you though prayer and fasting.

There is a story in the Bible of a man who sought out the disciples to help his son. The disciples could not help. The boy’s father brought his son to Jesus and said, “Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; and wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.”

Jesus cast the demon out of the boy. When the disciples asked why they could not cast out the demon, Jesus replied, “This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”

There is power in prayer and power in fasting. When you put prayer and fasting together, look out! Mountains are ready to move! Demons tremble!

The question you may be asking is, how is that story relevant in my life? Good question! Prayer and fasting are not limited to casting out demons. Do you have areas of your life that you have battled with forever it seems? These areas could be in your emotions, your thought life, and your actions. Is there an addiction you have been dealing with for far too long? Sometimes these things only go away with prayer and fasting.

Why? Because when you take the time to fast, you are charging your spirit battery. Remember you can either feed the spirit or the flesh. If you have those issues, and some of them are sins, then you have been feeding the flesh. You feed the flesh by what you see, what you touch, by what you ingest, by what you hear.

You feed the spirit by hearing the Word of God and fasting food. When you separate yourself from your everyday problems, and get closer to God in prayer and fasting, the Father becomes more real to you. Suddenly it seems someone has given you a better set of eyes, and things that were murky are now clear. The Father will come and give you the strength to destroy the yokes of bondage and remove the burdens. Freedom is a wonderful thing to walk in. The guilt and condemnation you put on yourself will be gone, and you can fulfill the commandment to love yourself, so that you can love your neighbor.

Prayer and fasting will produce incredible results in your life. It will produce incredible results for this nation, for your city, for your friends, and for your family. Fasting is a restriction of food for a spiritual purpose; however, there are many ways of restricting food and several books on the subject. God will lead you to the one that is appropriate for you. If you have a medical condition that prevents you from fasting, then I am sure God will show you an alternative if you seek Him.

I believe the greatest powers we employ, prayer and fasting, are missing from the church, and that is why the church is so weak today.
